The cut is man's contribution to
converting a piece of diamond rough into a beautiful
breath taking diamond. A flawless diamond poorly cut
could be rejected by a diamond dealer, beacuase the
stone would have a dull and glassy appearance. On the
other hand an ecellent cut can give brilliance and sparkle
to a flawed diamond.
The color is the true beauty of a
diamond. Color ranges from D to F (colorless), G to
J ( near colorless), K to M (faint yellow), N to Z (light
yellow), and Z+ for fancy colored diamonds. The color
in diamonds rated up to J will be virtually invisible
when set in a piece of jewelry.
Except for flawless diamonds all
diamonds have distinguishing marks such as clouds, crystals
and feathering and these are called inclusions. There
are 11 grades used to grade diamonds. Flawless (no inclusions),
Internally Flawless (only external blemishes), VVS1
& VVS2 (very, very slightly included under a magnifier),
VS1 & VS2 ( very slightly included under 10X magnifier),
SI1 & SI2 (noticeable inclusions under 10X magnifier
- eye clean) and I1, I2 and I3 (inclusions eye-visible).
The weight of a diamond is often
expressed in opoints, with one point equaliing .01 carats.
One hundred points is referred to as a 1-carat diamond.
Diamonds can range in size from a fraction of a carat
to several carats. Depending on the rarity of large
diamonds, especially those with good color and clarity,
the cost of the stones increases rapidly with size.
Two .50 carats diamonds will cost much less than one
1.00 carat diamond.
